i am a big fan of the concept of community policing. that is the idea that our local police officers need to establish a better relationship with members of the community, residents, and merchants. through that community partnership, we have seen true successes in being able to combat crime. you have eyes and ears on the street cooperating with the men and women in blue. that helps to reduce crime. i have been pushing our police department to implement that. >> your district is a well-known nightlife destination. how do you balance the needs of the residents with the needs of the restaurants and bars? >> i moved into my neighborhood in part because we have such a wonderful vibrant nightlife. san francisco is famous for our restaurant scene, are seen, club scene. -- are sbar scene. we have had too much violence around these nighttime venues. i have passed several pieces of legislation to address the security and safety needs of neighborhoods. we all support a healthy, vibrant nightlife. but we also support a safe nightlife that complemen

there are big issues here. defense spending issues going to be very large, i think, for mcconnell because the reid approach had some serious cuts in defense spending. and then, you know,-- but mcconnell's already proposed some ideas that are likely to be incorporated in the reid-- in the reid bill that will allow the president to do a kind of second charge of increases in the debt limit without congress having much of an influence over it. congress would have to vote against it. so i think that the elements of a beale are here. you know, the problem from my perspective is, this is the easy stuff because it doesn't deal with tax,because it doesn't deal with entitlement. the question is, it doesn't even solve the deficit problem but it's been such a problem just to get the easy-- the question is that the rating agencies, the credit rating agencies and others, can can can they do the harder stuff right down the road? that, i think, is the real difficulty. >> one thing that hasn't been addressed, jim, and republica

, big issue. we haven't had a full-time orthopedic surgeon in my -- in montana for several months. the va is trying to recruit one when they can get them, and now we have got veterans who have traveled out of state, out-of-pocket care, quality of life goes down. there are 400 veterans on a weightless now approaching two years were orthopedic surgeries. it is completely unacceptable and i know montana's not the only state in this boat. i don't think it is cost effective to ship somebody miles and miles, hundreds of miles away from their home for surgery when they could be contracted locally in areas where we can't get docs in the va. can you tell me if this makes sense to you to locally contract if you can't get a doctor that is a specialist. and if it is not you mrs. st. james, somebody else can answer the question but it appears to me that this could help solve a problem where we have need and we can't fill a position. it just seems to me it would be a natural -- so you don't have to travel halfw
